Luke loves Daddy

For a while, I made dinner every night with Luke in the carrier on my back. Otherwise, he'd be trying to climb my legs. When David tried to hold him, he'd squirm and fuss until released, and then he'd come and climb my legs. Suddenly, though, Luke is much happier with David than before. When David holds Luke, sometimes I reach my arms out to Luke and he slumps into Daddy for a hug! Yesterday David needed to go out, but Luke wouldn't let me take him from Daddy's arms. David was going to take Luke with him, but when he tried to strap Luke into his carseat, Luke decided that actually leaving the house without me would be a bit much. Still, it's lovely to see them getting along so well.

Yo te amo mas que tu!

Emmett and I talked about Spanish today. Emmett told me that sometimes they call white ice-cream "nieve" (snow), and sometimes they call it "blanco helado" (though I think that might properly be "helado blanco," not that I would try to correct Emmett's Spanish!). I told Emmett, "Te amo" (I love you). He replied "Yo te amo mas que tu!" Once I figured out what he'd said, we went back and forth with "No, yo te amo mas que tu !" With my high-school Spanish, I would never have been able to come up with the proper way to say "I love you more (than you love me)." I don't often get glimpses into just how much Spanish he's learning, and just how natural it is for him. Most of the time I don't understand enough to know what he's saying. But it's fun when I actually get it!

Crafty

Today Luke has been sick, so Emmett's been fending for himself a little. We had some new paint (not washable kid stuff!) from the craft store. Luke was really upset so I didn't have time to get it out for Emmett to paint with. He came in the bedroom once to complain that he couldn't open it, but when I got Luke settled and returned to the table, he'd figured it out. He'd also gotten out paper to put under his project to keep paint off the table, and had decided to go wash his hands each time he got paint on them so they didn't get messy!

Luke's Elocution

Luke has two distinct modes of upset now. There's the general crying, of course. But if he's really upset, feeling wronged and ignored (because I'm running around the house looking for the carrier instead of holding him Right This Instant), his yelling changes. He screams "Dah duh duh dah (and so on)." Some words are accented more than others. He's babbling with words and sentence structure, trying to read you the riot act, but he just doesn't have the right words yet.

Luke can open the screen door by himself.

The summer heat has broken and we've been throwing the house open all day and night. So now you never know where Luke might be. But if I had to guess, I'd say he's outside trying to ride Emmett's scooter.

Spanish School Mornings

Is it wrong to enjoy, just a little bit, waking Emmett up in the morning for Spanish school? This morning while I was trying to cajole him out of bed, Emmett pointed out that we were both sideways. He was still lying in bed, and I was on my back on his floor. I asked him if he was getting out of bed and he shook his head yes. When I asked him why he wasn't getting up, he said that when his head was sideways, his head was really shaking side-to-side, not up-and-down so he'd really said no, not yes.

The Grass is Always Greener

When putting Luke to sleep it's best to keep the room very dark, so I keep the bedroom door closed. Tonight I trapped Jake in the room with us. When I was leaving he was lying just a few inches from the door, obviously ready to get out. When I opened the door Jenny was lying just outside in the hallway, waiting to get inside.

Vivid Imagination

Today Emmett was trying to climb between the couch and Jenny's chair and he fell. Like a ton of bricks. I thought he was doing it on purpose, diving in there. But no, it was an accident. Why did he fall? He was carrying an imaginary sword in one hand, so he couldn't use it for climbing.
