Feed ducks!

Luke has been wanting to feed ducks, so this morning we went to Wheeler Farm where they have lots and lots of ducks. Actually, they have a bunch of ducks and then they have zillions of Canada Geese.

We showed up with our bread and the mass of them - over a hundred at least - started slowly moving towards us from almost all sides. It was like Night of the Living Canada Geese out there! I picked up Luke and Emmett stayed close by my side while we fed them. Fortunately Emmett didn't freak out.

When our bread was gone they gave us a little more space, but were still all around. Luke decided to pick up a leaf and wave it at the geese, who responded by hissing at him. Yikes! Stepping between them and yelling at the goose wasn't as effective as I'd hoped. Those geese have no fear! But they did move away a little, so I left Luke on the ground. After a while, another family came to feed the geese so we were left in peace to play around the nearby stream. (And they were left with two screaming little girls until Daddy rescued them by picking them up.)

At the first week of their ski lessons, David dropped Emmett and Luke off at their classes.  Yesterday David was starting his class, though, so I took them to their classes.  There are a lot of classes that meet outside, so there are signs up for each class - the big kids meet by letters and the little kids meet by numbers.  Emmett is in class "I" and Luke is in class 11.  The alphabet signs were clearly visible as we approached, but the numbers were behind some trees so I turned to ask Luke which way we should go around them.  Emmett helpfully called out, "See those signs?  My class meets by the one with a single line on it!"  Um, thanks for describing the letter "I" in a way I can understand, Emmett!

A Short Eclipse Video

Our eclipse trip was ... stressful!!! We were in the Texas hill country, and all those cloud predictions, and the clouds we were experiencing the day before, had us on edge. Through the entire partial phase, the sun was behind the clouds, peeking through now and then. We didn't have a chance to play with eclipse shadows at all! Then during totality, the clouds were thin enough that we got to see it, for almost the entire duration of totality. We lost 20-30 seconds max. So much relief and joy! During the last few moments of totality the clouds rolled back in - I think it extended our experience of the Bailey's beads, because the clouds gave us extra protection as the sun returned (and then they swallowed the sun again).  Anyway, this short video (around a minute) captures our trip into totality, starting with cloud cover but a few seconds later the sun breaking through the clouds. ❤ Eclipse audio really is the best way to "understand" the difference between a partial e
