Henry's signs

Henry doesn't sign the way his brothers did. I don't know if it's that we're using fewer signs (because I'm spread thinner with three boys) or if it's something else, but he only signs when he really, really wants something.

For example, we recently went on a short canoe ride. Henry hated the life vest and was pretty unhappy to be in the canoe in general, but finally settled down and played with the water (as I kept an iron grip on his life vest). Emmett and Luke were both happy to paddle with Dad. While sitting on my lap near the end of the ride, Henry started grabbing the collar of my shirt in a classic "I want to nurse!" move. Since I was wearing a life vest and we were in a canoe he wasn't getting what he wanted. Only then did he start signing "milk" - I don't think I've seen him use that sign in weeks, maybe longer. (I guess pulling on my shirt works pretty well for him.)

Anyway, for posterity, here's a list of signs that Henry uses right now, at least occasionally:

Yeah - you never know what's going to stick. There are cats in a couple of books that we read, and there's a cat on Curious George. He seems to really like showing you that he knows what's up.

At the first week of their ski lessons, David dropped Emmett and Luke off at their classes.  Yesterday David was starting his class, though, so I took them to their classes.  There are a lot of classes that meet outside, so there are signs up for each class - the big kids meet by letters and the little kids meet by numbers.  Emmett is in class "I" and Luke is in class 11.  The alphabet signs were clearly visible as we approached, but the numbers were behind some trees so I turned to ask Luke which way we should go around them.  Emmett helpfully called out, "See those signs?  My class meets by the one with a single line on it!"  Um, thanks for describing the letter "I" in a way I can understand, Emmett!

A Short Eclipse Video

Our eclipse trip was ... stressful!!! We were in the Texas hill country, and all those cloud predictions, and the clouds we were experiencing the day before, had us on edge. Through the entire partial phase, the sun was behind the clouds, peeking through now and then. We didn't have a chance to play with eclipse shadows at all! Then during totality, the clouds were thin enough that we got to see it, for almost the entire duration of totality. We lost 20-30 seconds max. So much relief and joy! During the last few moments of totality the clouds rolled back in - I think it extended our experience of the Bailey's beads, because the clouds gave us extra protection as the sun returned (and then they swallowed the sun again).  Anyway, this short video (around a minute) captures our trip into totality, starting with cloud cover but a few seconds later the sun breaking through the clouds. ❤ Eclipse audio really is the best way to "understand" the difference between a partial e
